Carcassonne

Carcassonne is one of the most popular tourist attractions in France and the capital of Aude. The city straddles both banks of the river Aude, the walled mediaeval town on the south bank and the 13th century La Bastide St-Louis on the north. The Canal du Midi flows through the city on its way to the Mediterranean.

July is the high point of the cultural calender with a festival of opera, music, theatre and dance, finishing with a firework display in La Cite on the 14th July. The Caux et Sauzens sports ground provides a fantastic vantage point of the festivals fireworks.
